Sleep Studies
Are you getting a good night’s sleep? Restful sleep can reduce stress, increase alertness and memory, assist with weight loss, and help improve your overall health. At Carrus Health, our goal is for you to sleep soundly so you can enjoy your life and get back to doing what you love most.
If any of the following sounds familiar, you may be experiencing sleep disturbance and fatigue:
- Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning
- Repeatedly hitting the snooze button before getting up
- Waking up feeling irritable, stressed, and unrefreshed
- Feeling tired or sleepy throughout the day
- Difficulty falling asleep at night
We can help. At Carrus Health’s sleep center, located at our main campus in Sherman, Texas, we perform sleep studies in private rooms that are warm and inviting.
Why a Sleep Study May Be Recommended
Your physician may recommend you undergo a sleep study for a variety of reasons. A sleep study can confirm a particular diagnosis or rule out potential causes of your symptoms.
You may be referred to Carrus Health for a sleep study if you suffer from:
- Anxiety
- Decreased libido
- Depressive mood disorder
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Frequent awakenings
- Grinding/clenching teeth during sleep
- Hypersomnia (daytime sleepiness)
- Insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep)
- Memory loss
- Nocturnal eating
- Restless leg syndrome
- Shortness of breath
- Sleep apnea
- Sleepwalking
- Snoring
- Waking up tired or unrefreshed
- Unexplained weight gain
What to Expect During a Sleep Study
Some tests may be performed in the comfort of your own home. Other tests may require an overnight stay at the Carrus sleep center.
At-Home Testing
A home sleep test (HST) is a good screening tool to identify breathing disorders that may be impacting your sleep.
You will pick up the HST equipment at Carrus Health, where our specially trained staff will go over how to use the equipment at home. This test will evaluate your breathing effort, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and snoring during sleep. When the study is complete, you simply return the equipment to Carrus, where a board-certified sleep specialist will review your test results.
Often, an HST is the only sleep study needed to identify the cause of your problems and propose treatment options. Occasionally, however, your HST findings may require a follow-up study at the Carrus sleep center to more thoroughly analyze your sleep disorder and accurately identify the cause of your condition and what type of treatment you require.
Overnight Testing at the Carrus Sleep Center
An in-lab sleep test at Carrus is typically conducted overnight. To make the experience as comfortable as possible, our sleep center bedrooms are inviting, spacious, and relaxing. Each bedroom is equipped with a big-screen TV, Wi-Fi service, a comfy queen-size bed, extra oxygen, and a private bathroom. There are no needles or injections involved in our sleep studies.
For the overnight test, you will arrive at 7:30 pm or 8 pm. Be sure to bring pajamas and toiletries. For your convenience, we have an in-room shower, bathroom, and towels.
Before you go to bed, a sleep lab technician will attach sensors to your head and body. But don’t worry – you’ll be able to move freely and get comfortable. While you sleep, these sensors record data from your brain and body.
Our technician will monitor this data throughout the night. A sleep medicine doctor will then analyze the information and schedule an appointment to review the results with you and offer treatment recommendations.
We do not provide any food service, so it’s important that you have already had your evening meal before arriving at the sleep center. If you like, you can also bring some snacks. We provide morning refreshments. You are welcome to leave when you awake in the morning. Patients usually stay until at least 6 am.
